ESPN’s third season of Monday Night Football was the most-watched series on cable television in 2008, set an all-time cable viewership record for the third straight year and drew the year’s three biggest cable household audiences and 13 of the top 15. In three seasons on ESPN, Monday Night Football has registered seven of the top 10 all-time biggest household audiences in cable history, led by the Eagles-Cowboys telecast on September 15, which attracted cable’s largest household audience ever (an average of 12,953,000 million homes).

Berman Interviewed Presidential Nominees


On the eve of the presidential election, ESPN’s Chris Berman interviewed Republican Senator John McCain and Democratic Senator Barack Obama, during halftime of the MNF game.  The candidates were on the campaign trail and agreed to participate one-on-one via satellite with Berman.  Read more...

ESPN’s Monday Night Football – the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 23-20 overtime victory over the visiting Baltimore Ravens – earned an 8.8 rating, representing an average of 8,595,000 homes (11,783,000 P2+).  For the fourth straight Monday, ESPN won the night in the key male demos among all networks, broadcast or cable, and the game drove significant traffic to ESPN.com’s NFL content.  Read more...

Eagles at Dallas Game -- Biggest Audience in the History of Cable Television

The Monday, Sept. 15 Monday Night Football game – the Dallas Cowboys’ 41-37 home victory over the Philadelphia Eagles – delivered the biggest audience in the history of cable television.  The game earned a 13.3 rating, representing 12,953,000 homes (18,608,000 P2+), edging the previous record, ESPN’s New England – Baltimore Monday Night Football telecast of December 3, 2007 (12,529,000 homes, based on a 13.0 rating, 17,522,000 P2+).  In addition, for the second straight Monday, ESPN won the night among all networks, broadcast or cable, and the game drove significant traffic to ESPN.com’s NFL content.

New Technology Enhances ESPN’s NFL Game and Studio Programming

Saunders Joins Berman and Jackson

In his 30th season covering the NFL for ESPN, lead studio host Chris Berman – joined by his longtime partner Tom Jackson – will team with veteran ESPN anchor John Saunders to co-host the Sunday 7 p.m. edition of SportsCenter throughout the NFL season, beginning September 7.  The move reunites Berman and Jackson with Saunders, the trio that worked together during the first three years (1987-89) of NFL PrimeTime, cable television’s highest-rated sports studio show for 19 years (1987-2005).  Read more...

New Yorkers sure love football, and more specifically, ESPN's 'Is It Monday Yet?' promotional campaign for ESPN's Monday Night Football as evidenced by some 20 thefts of the network’s promotional turf-like mat postings which were installed at bus shelters and walls around the city. Monday Night Football Chalk Talk Luncheon Series

The Monday Night Football Chalk Talk Luncheon Series will return September 8 with the first of 12 events during the 2008 National Football League season.  National sponsors Dick’s Sporting Goods and Ruth’s Chris Steak House will continue their involvement in the second-year program which ESPN and the NFL launched to showcase the teams and host cities participating in the weekly MNF primetime games.  The luncheons will also include recognition ceremonies honoring local organizations for their involvement in youth fitness initiatives in their communities.  Read more...

2008 Monday Night Football Schedule

The 39th season of Monday Night Football will open on ESPN with a nationally televised doubleheader Monday, Sept. 8 – previously announced Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers (7 p.m. ) and Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders (10:15 p.m.) – and will continue with a total of 17 primetime games.  Following a successful season that delivered the four biggest cable household audiences of the year, and 16 of the top 20, ESPN’s schedule will feature 11 playoff teams from 2007, including both the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants and AFC champion New England Patriots.  Read more...
